Glenveagh Castle and National Park
Glenveagh National Park is 16,000 hectares of mountain, moorland, lakes and woods situated in a remote valley in county Donegal. The journey there takes you through contrasting scenry passing sea loughs, market towns and the spectacular rugged landscape of Donegal. The National Park provides a stunning backdrop for Glenveagh Castle and gardens as well as a visitor's centre and shops.
The castle built in the years 1870 - 1878 by the Adair family, was given to the Irish nation in 1983 by the latest owner, Henry McIlhenny from Philadlephia. A visit to Glenveagh includes a vist to this charming castle, and gives an insight into the history of this part of Ireland The 16,000 hectares also offers an attractive habitat for wood birds and herds of wild deer, and more recently, the Golden Eagle which was re-introduced to Ireland at Glenveagh by the Irish Raptor Study Group in 2000.
